3rd Courses on Science and Technology of SCWRs

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is organizing the 3rd course on Science and
Technology of Supercritical Water Cooled Reactors (SCWRs), to be held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai China, from August 26-30, 2013.
The training course will provide a group of international participants with a comprehensive and up-to-date review of SCWR science and technology.
The SCWR is an innovative water-cooled reactor concept which uses supercritical-pressure water as reactor coolant. This makes it possible to achieve high
thermal efficiency, and simplified systems, and so promises to improve plant economics. Increasing operating pressure and steam temperature is a natural evolution
from conventional water-cooled reactors as seen in fossil power technology. About 20 countries have been involved in research and development of the new concept.
The one-week course will consist of lectures covering fundamental and advanced concepts such as:
· Introduction and historical development of SCWRs
· Reactor physics and core design
· Thermal-hydraulics of supercritical fluids
· Plant dynamics and safety
· Materials and chemistry
The course is limited to 30 participants, and the lectures are geared to graduate students, university professors, researchers, engineers and regulators in the field
of nuclear engineering.
The participants will also engage in team discussions. After attending several lectures, the participants will be separated into teams and given topics for discussions
relating to the lectures. The participants have the opportunity to actively participate in the lectures and team discussions, which will help them to achieve a deeper
understanding of the contents of the lectures and enable close collaboration among team members

The course fee is $1,700 USD including taxes. Course fee includes:
· 5 days of lectures
· 4 lunches, 4 dinners and coffee breaks
· technical tour to supercritical fluid test facility at SJTU
· dinner banquet
The housing fee for SJTU residence is: about $ 70 US dollar per person, per night, including taxes. Housing fee includes:

As a rule, travel and subsidence expenses of the participants should be borne by the home institution. Every effort should be made by candidates to secure support
for their fare. However, limited funds are available for some participants, who are nationals of, and working in, a developing country. Such support, including a
waiver of the registration fee, is available only for those who attend the entire activity.
